Well, Black Wash has backed up those words by announcing Pagan as one of the most original and genre-bending new bands to recently emerge. Despite her music’s strength, there remains an affecting aura of vulnerability to Nikki’s performance as the album draws to a close, when she screams, ‘Someone save me’, in the record’s final moments. It’s a moving moment, but she doesn’t need saving. Her and her bandmates’ debut album is one of the year’s most triumphant and exciting releases, and they’ll put a spell on you before you know it. Words: Jake Richardson.

Black Wash was PAGAN’s first album to appear anywhere other than Bandcamp, as well as their most popular, this may make it seem like their debut album (however their debut is in fact Book of Spells). Artwork Olivia Brumen. Mastered by Brad Boatright. Mixed By Mike Deslandes. Engineered By Mike Deslandes.

Black Wash does exactly what any debut album should do for whichever band is behind its creation: it pronounces a powerful statement of intent. Across the eleven tracks on offer, Australia’s own Pagan cram an unholy mixture of disco, hardcore and metal into a can and spray-paint a dizzyingly decorative clash of colours onto a blank canvas framed by jagged punk rhythms. On paper, this fusion shouldn’t necessarily work, but Pagan has created an electrifying debut album which remains coherent despite launching their audience curveball after curveball.

Pagan take their Bathory-turned disco tunes to greater heights that outshine many debut records of the decade. Don’t get me wrong, there are a significant amount of artists that have brought that ‘all killer, no filler’ chic to the unveiling of their first album. But Pagan has succeeded in unleashing what sounds like one of the most perfect debut full-length albums in Australian heavy music history. How often does one come across an album that not only makes you wanna gyrate and headbang, but is enjoyable to the max all the way through? Seriously, someone give all of them – Nikki, Xavier, Dan, and Matt – a massive raise, because all four are beyond gifted

Pagan's debut album Black Wash in finally here and will no doubt fall into the category of some of the best released albums of 2018 so fa. Melbournian rock quartet Pagan are no less than enigmatic and their debut album is no different. A collection of emotional metal disco moments, Black Wash manages to suck the listener into their own emotional rollercoaster of addictive dance and no less addicting contemplation. Pagan manage to fuse the upbeat and nostalgia reeking riffs of older rock, scratchy yet undeniably catchy vocals à la black metal, heaped with a thick coating of relentless punk energy
