Description

1966's "A Web Of Sound" was the Seeds' second LP, and for many, the record showcases the band at its finest. This deluxe two-disc set features both the original stereo and mono versions on CD for the first time, along with previously unissued outtakes and the first mono mix of the "Full Spoon Of Seedy Blues" album.

A Web of Sound is the second album by the American garage rock band the Seeds. Produced by Marcus Tybalt and released in October 1966, it contained the single "Mr. Farmer" and the 14-minute closing song "Up In Her Room".

A good CD-only compilation of Seeds hits and new rarities from the 1960s. Criminally, the Satan version of The Wind Blows Your Hair wasn’t included. Two from The Seeds, zero from A Web Of Sound (!), one from A Full Spoon Of Seedy Blues, and three from Raw & Alive are here. Some are in alternate mixes or takes or (for the latter album) without fake crowd sounds. The CD booklet features a short essay by Daryl Hooper about the formation, and the excitement of being in, The Seeds, as well as an exclamation mark-heavy description of each song by Neil Norman, son of Gene ( GNP is Gene Norman Presents ).

Not so here, the sound is alive; however the disc is in fact stereo. From start to finish The Seeds first album is a great piece of rock and roll. Sky Saxon writes and delivers great songs that stick in your head and stay there. Simple yet fantastic rock n roll that some have said pre-dated punk music and laid the path for things to start in that vein 10 years later. I love every song on this release as would any true rock fan.

The Seeds were an American rock band. The group, whose repertoire spread between garage rock and acid rock, are considered an influential proto-punk band. Lead singer Sky Saxon had a musical career that went back to pre-Beatle music days, when he recorded a few 45s under the name Richie Marsh. Born in Salt Lake City, he was based in Los Angeles from the early 1960s.

Like the first Ramones album, it is one of rock’s great debuts; a record where a signature style was sharply defined. Never mind that, at the time of its release in July 1966, The Seeds was one of the very few albums by an unknown group that contained completely original material; it was also one of the few albums from a group of their kind, full stop. Saxon’s insistence upon a stark and eye-catching front cover, depicting the combo in all their hirsute glory, guaranteed curiosity at the very least. But it was what the record contained that counts, and it is mandatory listening for any true. The quartet span their own relentless web of sound, tinged with a haunting patina that is uniquely Seeds.
