Music written for the Djazzex dance troupe, this album is all too representative of the staid (though still extremely competent) rut that Breuker found himself in during the '90s. His previously rich melodic sense seemed to lose color and drama, his once intricate and driving rhythms became more plodding and forced.

Although there remains a heaviness that has permeated many Breuker's large group performances, there is also some very exciting soloing and arranging. The second half of the album features a mini-opera by the leader, replete with vocals by Greetje Bijma and Breuker himself. Classical influences lie just beneath the surface, with Lorre Lynn Trytten's violin and Bijma's voice singing half-mockingly. As good a place as any for an introduction to Breuker's work, this CD should satisfy Breuker's devotees and attract new fans.
