Secret Museum of Mankind: Music of North Africa, 1925-1948. Particular cultural regions represented on this CD include Tunisia, Morocco, Algeria, Libya, Sudan, and Timbuktu. If all you've ever heard from North Africa are Moroccan talents - such as Hassan Hakmoun and the Master Musicians of Jajouka - then check out this wonderfully eclectic and inspiring collection of North African "roots" music.

Once again, long forgotten 78s have been salvaged from oblivion, dusted off, and digitally remastered onto CDs by the museum's industrious staff. This release, not unlike the others in this series, is comprised of selections that span a vast spectrum of musical and cultural genres. The first track features a Swedish herder calling her flock with a high-pitched croon that must have penetrated the deep Scandinavian forests with ease. A track from Pakistan displays a mesmerizing fusion of the Scottish war-pipes, a North Indian melodic sensibility, and Hindustani percussion.

This CD opens with a late '30s recording of an alluring yet laid back performance by a Nigerian choral, organ, and drum ensemble. An impressive Sardinian launeddas (triple read pipe) solo rendered by an experienced player comes next.
