The first re-issue of this LP, Tapper Zukie - Man Ah Warrior, which came in 1977, added "Viego" and "A Message To Pork Eaters" while omitting the three titles mentioned above. Generally it's nice to have some bonus tracks but in this case they diminish the overall impression compared to the original release. They don't fit this raw material. This album is plainly insane. Legend says that Zukie himself wasn't aware of the fact that he's recording material that will actually be released, and was surprised coming back to England a few years later and seeing this LP in stores. Young Zukie was sent off to UK by his relatives because he got involved in some trouble in Jamaica.
4. Simpleton Badness. 5. Archie, The Red Nose Reindeer. In England he started to deejay for some soundsystems and at some point stumbled upon Patti Smith, who took him into a studio. The tracks are as rough as Perry's most insane material, only even a bit more rugged.
Recorded during sessions with producer Clem Bushay in England, Zukie never expected these cuts to turn into an album, and was quite startled to discover this record in the London shops when he came to town in the spring of 1975. It's evident that the tracks were earmarked as potential singles, something the poor sequencing merely reinforces
Originally released in 1973, Tapper Zukie’s Man Ah Warrior (a debut album with cult status) has been reissued several times. In 1977 New York punk priestess Patti Smith put out the original album in the US on the MER label, followed by the Trojan Records release in 2003, which featured 6 bonus tracks on the CD version. About two years ago Kingston Sounds, the subsidiary of Jamaican Recordings, came up with the next reissue of Man Ah Warrior. Just like the Trojan Records releases, the LP & CD version lack the track Summertime from the original Count Shelly released album. I King Zukie is a big tune, an interplay between the soulful vocal of I Dont Know Why I Love You (originally done by Stevie Wonder) and Tapper Zukie’s toasting. All in all a worthy opening part of an intriguingly different album that furthermore includes remarkable tunes such as the wicked Viego, the hypnotic ganja piece Cally Dolly, When Zukie Day Yah across a version of the Slaving riddim, the cautionary A Message To Pork Eaters and Zukie Fashionwear with a big trombone and at the beginning Willie Williams (although Delroy Wilson is. mentioned in the song) singing lines from.
The Man Ah Warrior album had gained Zukie a cult following in the UK, and he returned there in 1975, releasing the track "MPLA" as a single, which was sufficiently successful for Klik to issue the album of the same name in the UK. One notable fan of MPLA was Patti Smith, who gave Zukie a support slot on her UK tour, reissued Man a Warrior on her Mer label, and contributed sleeve-notes to his 1977 album Man From Bosrah.
