Peter Alexander Makkay (born 30 August 1949 in Brașov, Romania), better known as Peter Maffay, is a Romanian-born German musician. Born in Braşov, Romania, the son of a German (Transylvanian Saxon), he was 14 when his family relocated to his parents' (West) Germany in 1963. In the same year, he started his first band, The Dukes. After completing his education and working for Chemigraphics, an art manufacturer, Maffay worked in clubs, where he distributed his music.

Rocker Peter Maffay was the best-selling German pop star of his generation, wielding his celebrity to become a powerful advocate for antiwar efforts and an outspoken critic of domestic abuse. Born Peter Alexander Makkay on August 30, 1949, in Brasov, Romania, he was 14 when his family relocated to his parents' native Germany. Soon after, he founded his first rock band, the Dukes. Maffay made another album as himself, Ewig, in 2008, and in 2010 released Tattoos, a 40th anniversary collection featuring re-recorded versions of all his biggest hits. Wenn Das So Ist, released in February 2014, was a massive hit, reaching number one in Germany and charting for over a year. In 2017, Maffay released MTV Unplugged, a live acoustic concert featuring some of his most beloved songs, as well as some special guests.
Du (English: You) is a song by Peter Maffay, which was the biggest German hit in early 1970 and brought Maffay instant fame.
