Ooh Poo Pah Doo" is a song written by and performed by Jessie Hill. It reached on the . R&B chart and on the . The song was arranged and produced by Allen Toussaint. By the early sixties, the song on the A-side was the song that the company wanted radio stations to play. It was not until 1968, for instance, that the production of albums on a unit basis finally surpassed that of singles in the United Kingdom. In the late 1960s stereo versions of pop and rock songs began to appear on 45s. The majority of the 45s were played on AM radio stations, by the early 1970s, double-sided hits had become rare. The term rhythm and blues was used by Billboard in its chart listings from June 1949 until August 1969, before the Rhythm and Blues name was instated, various record companies had already begun replacing the term race music with sepia series. In 2010 LaMont Robinson founded the Rhythm & Blues Hall of Fame Museum, writer and producer Robert Palmer defined rhythm & blues as a catchall term referring to any music that was made by and for black Americans.

Typically, few guitars were present; New Orleans Soul songs were driven by piano and sax (sometimes horn sections made entirely or largely of saxophones), and often featured no-nonsense lyrics, fat midtempo rhythms, and an angelic female voice or two in the background - possibly a nod to the influence of Atlantic's ever-present backing choir, though simpler and. grittier. Although the genre produced about two dozen national hits, its impact was at first largely regional; perhaps no other Sixties musical scene contains so many unrecognized gems that never made it out of the city. The most Latin of the New Orleans Soul hits and a very popular number with the Mods - the Who did an early cover. Ooh Poo Pah Doo (Pts. 1 & 2)," Jessie Hill: The Who also covered this nonsense number in their very first gig caught on film, and it shows how well this song filled the dance floor. Although the words are so oblique as to be meaningless.
