Rossini’s thirty-fifth opera, The Siege of Corinth, which was originally performed at the Paris Opera in 1826, is generally regarded as the first Grand Opera in history-the model followed in certain works by Auber, Meyerbeer, Verdi and Wagner. Six years earlier, however, most of the music for The Siege of Corinth had served for Mahomet II which Rossini wrote in 1820 for Naples where it failed with the San Carlo audience because of its unhappy ending.

The "Rossini Overtures" are performed here by the London Symphony Orchestra, as well as the compositions "The Thieving Magpie," "The Silken Ladder" and "William Tell," the last opera Rossini ever wrote. He currently lives in New York City where he teaches conducting. If the present recording is any indication of his interpretive and conducting skills, it is a pity we don’t have a lot of recordings of this incredibly talented musician. Each overture is give a high voltage interpretation and performance that I have never heard equaled and which bears resemblance to those you might hear from Toscanini.
