Part of Delta's five-part Jazz Piano Anthology, Jazz Piano Anthology: In the Beginning kicks things off with an overview of some of the most important tinklers from the early jazz and swing eras. Most of the recordings, though, are not from the eras in question, including some '50s and '60s dates by Earl Hines and Teddy Wilson.
Free Jazz: A Collective Improvisation is the sixth album by jazz saxophonist and composer Ornette Coleman, released on Atlantic Records in 1961, his fourth for the label. Its title established the name of the then-nascent free jazz movement. The recording session took place on December 21, 1960, at A&R Studios in New York City. The sole outtake from the album session, "First Take," was later released on the 1971 compilation Twins. With more highlights by James P. Johnson, Jelly Roll Morton, and Fats Waller capping things off, this jazz piano collection should please fans anxious to hear some of the greats in top form.

Free jazz is an approach to jazz music that was rst developed in the 1950s and 1960s. Though the music of free jazz composers varied widely, a common feature was dissatisfaction with the limitations of bebop, hard bop, and modal jazz that had developed in the 1940s and 1950s. Free jazz musicians attempted to alter, extend, or break down jazz convention, often by discarding xed chord changes or tempos. These new arrivals, including musicians such as Arthur Blythe, James Newton, and Mark Dresser, marked the beginning of the Loft Era. As the name may imply, musicians during this time would often perform in private homes and other unconventional spaces.
An essential introduction to jazz for beginners, these 20 albums offer a guide to jazz that traces the music’s development over the 50s and 60. Though bebop was beginning to make its presence felt in the jazz world, there was still room for Satchmo and his authentic New Orleans-style jazz, as packed concert halls attested to. Satchmo At Symphony Hall contains some of Armstrong’s seminal tunes and features him fronting a seven-piece band that included Jack Teagarden on trombone.
Common critical consensus has free jazz reaching the end of its ‘glory years’ in the late 1960s and early 1970s. If the loft jazz scene was contained in NYC, private press records were turning up from all over America – there are representatives in this list from Missouri, Ohio, Michigan and beyond. I’ve noticed this Clifford Thornton album receive short shrift from a number of quarters, which is quite odd once you’ve actually listened to the beast. Thornton may be better known for his higher-profile albums, like The Panther & The Lash on America, or Ketchaoua on French free jazz imprint BYG/Actuel, but Communications Network has a rough grace all of its own.
