That last picture show, incidentally, is Howard Hawks' celebrated Western, Red River (1948) starring John Wayne and Montgomery Clift. Well, the movie houses came back to life as multiplexes charging eight bucks a pop, but the Western movie died out, and the boys watching that movie went their separate ways into manhood.
Moving Pictures is the eighth studio album by Canadian rock band Rush. The album was recorded and mixed October in November 1980 at Le Studio, Morin Heights, Quebec and released February 12, 1981. Following the formula of their previous album, Permanent Waves, Moving Pictures follows a more radio-friendly format and includes the hit singles "Tom Sawyer" and "Limelight", as well as radio standard "Red Barchetta". Also, some of the songs, such as "Vital Signs" include raggae influences.
Terry explains: " In Moving Pictures and Reaper Man a lot of use is indeed made of, god help me, Victorian street sayings that were the equivalent of 'sez you'. Tuppence more and up goes the donkey", a favourite saying of Windle Poons, comes from the parties of strolling acrobats who'd carry their props on a donkey. They'd make a human pyramid and collectors would go around with the hat declaring that "tuppence more and up goes the donkey" as well. This is from a famous H. P. Lovecraft quote (which was also used by metal groups Iron Maiden (on the Live After Death album cover) and Metallica (in the song 'The Thing That Should Not Be')): That is not dead which can eternal lie And with strange aeons even death may die.
Moving Pictures was the band's most popular release yet as it reached on the Billboard 200 chart and the UK albums chart, as well as on the Canadian Albums Chart. It has since gone 4x Platinum in the . and Canada, as well as Silver in the . The strengths of this album are the progressive, but radio friendly style, the great musicianship, the excellent lyrics and themes, and the abundance of terrific catchy Rush hits. The only weakness on Moving Pictures is the final track "Vital Signs" that does not reach the heights of the rest of the album
