Tribute to Horowitz ~ Matsuev. I think it's funny that Matsuev played the HR2 in a completely un-Horowitz-y way on an album dedicated to him. I'm not talking about the cadenza (which people will either love or hate-I loved it), but the finale. Horowitz would play those octaves in unison, Matsuev goes for the hard way and plays the octaves in alternation at full speed and full volume. Maybe he sacrifices a little romanticism for technical virtuosity, but I love it. It's fierce.
Denis Matsuev was born into a family of musicians in the city of Irkutsk, Siberia in 1975. He began taking piano lessons at the age of four, and made his debut with Haydn?s Piano Concerto when he was nine. In 1991, Matsuev moved to Moscow to continue his professional training at the Moscow Central Specialized Music School, where he became a laureate of the International Charity Foundation ?New Names? program and received the opportunity to appear in over 400 cities in Russia and 42 countries abroad.
Denis Matsuev: Liszt, F. · Bizet, G. · Ginsburg, Grigory. Denis Matsuev (piano). RCA Red Seal (82876612732) International Release: March 2005. Release: March 1 2005. This young winner of the Tchaikovsky award reminds us of the young Guilels: a coloss like a woodcutter, has the power and the musicality alike. Contrarily to a number of his contemporaries, he never goes too quick or too noisy. Classica-Répertoire 2/2006.
Denis Leonidovich Matsuev (Russian: Дени́с Леони́дович Мацу́ев, born June 11, 1975) is a Russian classical pianist. Born in Irkutsk, Soviet Union, Matsuev is the only child of two musicians, as his mother is a piano teacher and his father is a pianist and composer. He demonstrated a musical ear at age 3, when he reproduced on the piano at home a melody that he heard on television. His father subsequently became his first piano teacher. Until age 15, Matsuev studied music in Irkutsk
In 1998 Denis Matsuev won the International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow, following which he began to tour throughout the world and appear with renowned symphony orchestras. The pianist's partners include the New York Philharmonic Orchestra, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Los Angeles and Cincinnati Symphony Orchestras, the Berliner Philharmoniker, the Orchestre de Paris, Leipzig's Gewandhausorchester, the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the Philharmonia orchestra and the BBC Symphony Orchestra among others. In 2004 he concluded a contract with BMG. The pianist's first project with the company was the solo album Tribute to Horowitz, which in 2005 received the Record award.
Liszt: Dante Sonata Liszt: Mephisto Waltz No. 1 Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2 (cadenza: Matsuev) Bizet-Horowitz: Carmen Variations Rossini-Ginsburg: Fantasy on Figaro’s cavatina from Il barbiere di Siviglia. Denis Matsuev, piano. Virtuosity galore, one star down mostly because of the miserable TT.
