Queen - A Night At The Opera (1975).

A Night at the Opera is the fourth studio album by the British rock band Queen, released on 21 November 1975 by EMI Records in the United Kingdom and by Elektra Records in the United States. Produced by Roy Thomas Baker and Queen, it was reportedly the most expensive album ever recorded at the time of its release. The album's title is taken from the Marx Brothers film of the same name.

Notably, it was the gold that established the basis for Opera having been given a go. The band dealt with the bad deal directly, and the remaining wounds seemed to have been healed by their passionate work for their art’s sake in the studio, with many thanks to a new manager, LoneRanger (who was also Elton John’s). Opera was an immense financial risk for Queen’s label (EMI). And yet the band were given free-reign to make the most expensive album ever recorded/produced in 1975. Its cost came in at over £40K (the present value would yield a far more, uh, impressive figure). In 1978, Fleetwood Mac would rack-up the unofficial award for most expensive album ever : Tusk.

A Night At The Opera album is a masterpiece. Everything from its title to the music, the whole pomp and circumstance of the entire package is majestic. The 12 tracks that make up A Night At The Opera comfortably broke the 43-minute mark, and like its predecessor, the sequencing of this record creates its own dynamic. This is an album that should be listened to in its entirety rather than through the unpredictability of random play and shuffle. Queen made the most of the 24 track set-ups Baker brought to the table, and along with the engineer, the late Mike Stone who sadly passed away in 2002, they collectively created a great sounding record.

Of course, A Night at the Opera was also the title of a Marx Brothers movie, and the reference isn't lost on Queen, who seldom scaled the heights of pomprock without a knowing wink. The album is remembered for its meticulously produced bombast, but the truth is that there's a wide variety of material here, from the gorgeous piano-based "You're My Best Friend" and the McCartneyesque "39" to the music-hall-style "Lazing on a Sunday Afternoon" and the pedal-to-the-metal rockers "Death on Two Legs" and "I'm in Love with. Produced by Roy Thomas Baker and Queen, it was the most expensive album ever recorded at the time of its release. The album takes its name from the Marx Brothers film of the same name, which the band watched one night at the studio complex when recording.
