Performed by the New Jersey Wind Symphony, this beautiful and solemn work from 1967 is "a tribute to the tragedy and heroic resurrection of the Armenian people. Symphony No. 19 (Vishnu), op. 217 is one gigantic melodic line surrounded by preludes and interludes of incredible atmospheric writing. It is subtitled for the Indian god Vishnu, the preserver of the infinite universes and worlds beyond those of the physical.

First I tried Symphony No. 19 based on the recommendations here. Wild but controlled chaos bursts out in brass and percussion in free, rhythmless passages, followed by bells.

Alan Hovhaness's catalog of symphonies is numbered up to 67, but 75 is nearer the mark if suppressed early works and an unnumbered chamber symphony are included. It was Hovhaness's longevity which afforded him the time to compose so many, the last 43 of them being penned after his 60th birthday. But by the mid-1970s (from around Symphony N. 6 onwards) the drama and inventiveness, if not the productivity, were tapering off somewhat.
