Are you a professional or an amateur? I'm going to ask you to consider being a professional. But, before I do and before you can answer the question I posed, I need to make sure you are fully aware of what I mean when I talk about being a professional. For me, the difference is simple: A professional always does everything necessary to complete a job. An amateur sometimes chooses only the fun parts. An Example of the Difference. An amateur golfer, for example, may thrill at the crack of hitting a 300-yard drive but hate putting  . A professional knows that ultimately his job is to do whatever it takes to help the team. Often that means taking the time to have conversations about the tasks at hand or taking on some of the less desirable parts of the work. A Team of Amateurs Makes Software Development Difficult.

Distinguishing amateur from professional artists is tricky business. It is not just a matter of your ability to create nice paintings. It also has nothing to do with whether you have a 'real' job or not. There are many factors that play into taking that step and it doesn't happen instantly. As much as many amateur artists hate to hear it, success does not happen overnight and it is not based on skill or personality alone. Have you attempted abstract painting? What about Impressionism? Maybe mixed media is your true calling. The thing is that you will never know until you try and there is no reason to be stuck on the same subject matter unless you really love it and have tried others. Every professional artist started with the same subjects. Some continued on with those and perfected them and many ventured out beyond those conventional boundaries.

Hobbyist, Amateur, or Professional. The first thing to understand is the difference between being a hobby artist, an amateur artist, and a professional artist. As you read through the descriptions below, be honest with yourself. Once you recognize where you are starting from, it becomes obvious what to do next. Are You A Hobbyist? Hobby artists may spend years, decades, or even an entire lifetime making art strictly for personal pleasure. They want no responsibility for a business.

A professional isn’t going to think she can do it herself and isn’t going to make it an emergency. An amateur, on the other hand, may or may not follow any of those principles. An amateur is comparing you to what? A miracle? To free? To something in between?

While an amateur stagnates and becomes overconfident of his ability, a professional knows there is still a lot to learn and improve upon. 2. An amateur feels he is good enough; a professional knows he is never good enough. The artist is always beginning. Any work of art which is not a beginning, an invention, a discovery is of little worth. While an amateur stagnates and becomes overconfident of his ability, a professional knows there is still a lot to learn and improve upon. Professionals empty themselves and want to get better at their craft and are never too proficient to accept corrections. 3. An amateur is in a hurry; a professional is always patient. Art doesn’t have to be pretty. It has to be meaningful.
