Between the Funk and the Fear is the debut full-length from Hologram Teen, the anagrammatic moniker of Morgane Lhote, who played keyboards in Stereolab for several years during the late '90s and early 2000s. Her solo work blends a multitude of influences, ranging from synth-heavy horror soundtracks to Euro-disco to instrumental hip-hop to Brazilian psych rock.
Limited to 500 Copies. The second of September’s wonderful brace of new Polytechnic Youth LPs, sees the debut for Morgane Lhote’s first solo outing (since her Stereolab days), with her ace new project Hologram Teen. 11 killer -often whacked out- tracks inspired by a multitude of key figures from varying genres; the soundtracks of Goblin and John Carpenter, 1970s French Disco and psychedelic Brazilian rock, Congolese Soukous, and the string arrangements of François de Roubaix and Jean-Claude Vannier. A very filmic, hugely adventurous full length- perhaps a slight departure from previous output.
Between the Funk and the Fear is one of the best debut albums I've heard all year. Out now on Polytechnic Youth, it's the product of Hologram Teen aka Morgane Lhote, who was the keyboard player in Stereolab during their "imperial phase" between 1995-2001 when they released classics such as Emperor Tomato Ketchup and Dots and Loops. Since leaving the group, Lhote has played in The Projects and Garden, but Hologram Teen is her very first project as a solo artist. Tell us about the influences that went into the album. It certainly feels like an electronic horror film soundtrack, and I can also hear Giorgio Moroder, Can, M83, DJ Shado. es, it was definitely conceived as a horror film soundtrack in the vein of Goblin and John Carpenter.
Ex-Stereolab keyboardist, Morgane Lhote, recently released her very first debut album as Hologram Teen ‘Between The Funk And The Fear’ (Polytechnic Youth). This follows last years widely acclaimed ‘Marsangst’ EP (Happy Robots Records).
Love + Fear goes further, at least conceptually, by literally splitting the album into two parts. On the first portion, Love, she’s nostalgic for home, in reverence to romantic love, jealous of spiders for having their place in the universe all figured out and repeating self-help mantras to convince herself that she’s ok over Latin beats and sparse, synthy undertows. There’s love but also anxiety. BMTH frontman Oli Sykes wants to assert the fragility of the boundary between love and hate. Amo is a way of exploring that, even down to the title itself. Closer I Don’t Know What to Say is cinematic in its symphonic drama – perhaps inspired by their 2016 shows at the Royal Albert Hall that featured a full orchestra and choir – and becomes the album’s most moving song. The album takes in everything from jazz, funk and soul to punk and heavy rock, plus three carefully chosen features.
Love and Fear is the ninth studio album by Australian rock musician, Jimmy Barnes. It peaked at Barnes' lowest charting album, and his only album not to peak in the top 5. It was certified Gold by ARIA for sales of 35,000 in Australia. Love and Fear purged a lot of demons that had been plaguing Barnes for many years. He confronted issues that he had avoided by being on tour and by drinking and taking drugs.
