Rod Stewart is hoping his upcoming "Soulbook" album may launch a series similar to his multi-platinum "The Great American Songbook" series earlier this decade. Oh, I'd love it to. That would be just amazing, but I'm not going to count my chickens before they hatch, as they say," Stewart tells Billboard. There's a hell of a lot of material left over, so if ('Soulbook') is a success, I will definitely do a follow-up. Meanwhile, Stewart says that commitments to promote "Soulbook" are also keeping him from rejoining the Faces for an Oct. 25 fundraiser for the Performing Rights Society's Music Members' Benevolent Fund at London's Royal Albert Hall, though he applauded the choice of Paul Rodgers to sing in his stead. As for any other Faces reunions, Stewart says there's "nothing concrete yet" and anything will be dependent on his schedule as well as the Rolling Stones' plans for guitarist Ron Wood.
On "Soulbook," we have Rod Stewart doing what is seems his voice was born to do - cover classic soul songs from the 60s and 70s. The songs he chooses for this album are classic soul hits - songs everyone will recognize which makes this an easy to like album upon first listen. Rod does a good job of using arrangements that make these songs feel as "fresh" as possible considering all of these songs have been covered millions of times by some of the greatest voices in music (and the not-so-greats). Likewise, he has choosen a great selection of material here to cover and the careful song selection does alot to enhance this album. Also, the duets with Mary J. Blige and Jennifer Hudson were great; I am not a fan of either singer and was pleasently suprised at how each woman's vocie was a superb addition to "Soulbook.

British pop crooner Rod Stewart, 64, is no stranger to the American songbook- he began his career in 1963 singing blues and R&B with Jimmy Powell & the Five Dimensions, in Birmingham, England. As the frontman of the Jeff Beck Group, Stewart dug into the blues and even delved into show tunes on the band’s 1968 debut Truth, delivering a powerful version of Ol’ Man River, from the musical Show Boat. Knowing a good thing, Stewart has returned to that formula three more times. His latest album, Soulbook, finds the singer moving back to his roots in a nod to the popular neo-soul movement. Produced by Steve Jordan and Steve Tyrell, this tribute is a smorgasbord of smooth soul sounds culled from the Motown, Stax, and Philadelphia International catalogs that have long been an essential part of the soundtrack of America in the 60s and 70s.
