Sibelius did not in fact mark the opening movement of his Violin Concerto tenebroso appassionato, but he might has well have. Nor did he acknowledge having swiped the opening gesture of the first movement of Sinding's Violin Concerto for the closing movement of his Violin Concerto, but he certainly should have. Kraggerud plays with immense power, enormous technique, and a raging appassionato, while Engeset conducts with huge strength, colossal control, and a rigorous sense of rhythm.

Violin Concerto No. DDD . 57266. Henning Kraggerud, Violin Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra. Sibelius continued his active career as a composer until 1926, his fame increasing at home and abroad. The successful Symphony No. 1 of 1898 was followed by the still more successful Finlandia. Busoni had tried to arrange for the publication of his music by Belyayev, patron of the later nineteenth-century Russian nationalist composers, on the excuse that the Finns were, in a sense, Russians, or at least citizens of a Russian grand-duchy. This came to nothing, but subsequent publication by Breitkopf and Härtel ensured a wider public abroad than provincial Finland itself could ever offer. Henning Kraggerud. 69b, No. 2: Lento assai.
