Joseph Rudolph "Philly Joe" Jones (July 15, 1923 – August 30, 1985) was an American jazz drummer, known as the drummer for the first "Great" Miles Davis Quintet. He should not be confused with "Papa" Jo Jones, another drummer who had a long tenure with Count Basie. The two men died only a few days apart. As a child, Jones appeared as a featured tap dancer on The Kiddie Show on the Philadelphia radio Station WIP. He was in the US Army during World War II.

Their debut disc for Uptown has Donald Sickler's transcriptions of six Dameron originals (including "Philly . " "Soultrane," and "On a Misty Night"). The nonet is comprised of many fine veteran players: trumpeters Sickler and Johnny Coles, trombonist Britt Woodman, altoist Frank Wess, Charles Davis on tenor, baritonist Cecil Payne, pianist Walter Davis, J. bassist Larry Ridley, and Jones himself.

PHILLY JOE JONES' DAMERONIA is a big band music artist. Philly Joe Jones first recorded with Dameron in 1953 and developed a love for Dameron's writing and swinging sensitivity. But when Jones decided to form a Dameron tribute band in the early 1980s with trumpeter Don Sickler, the duo faced three problems: money, arrangements and publicity. The money issue was solved with a grant that Jones' wife applied for and received. There were no Dameron charts in existence, so Sickler had to transcribe Dameron's recordings.

The album proved that while he was never a great pianist he was a master at accompanying soloists, building performances by prodding and prompting the musicians, conducting from the keyboard, and creating vivid, haunting moods.
