Never Grow Old, their debut album from 1963 (with four bonus tracks added), features the clear harmonies of teenage Toots soaring out over tight back-up from the Maytals and Don Drummond's up-beat Skatalities horn section. A blend of gospel, soul and the Jamaican beat, songs such as the exuberant "Six and Seven Books of Moses", the optimistic "I'll Never Grow Old" and "Sweet Sweet Johnny" ably show why Toots was originally known as "the Jamaican Otis Redding". This is a fine debut. This 1963 cd is the debut album from Toots & the Maytals, a band that are still going as strong today as they were when this album was released. This man is a living legend and it's great to hear him here at the very beginning of his long and successful career.

Like all of the major Jamaican bands of the time, the Maytals were performing ska during this era, and doing a pretty good job of it, although the more distinctive stylings of their reggae prime are only hinted at here. Dodd (who co-wrote most of the songs with Toots Hibbert), and featuring the Skatalites on backup, it's respectable early ska, though not as good as the ska laid down by the Wailers in the mid-'60s.
