Description

Duke Ellington And His Orchestra: Alto Saxophone – Johnny Hodges, Rick Henderson, Russell Procope Baritone Saxophone – Harry Carney Bass – Jimmy Woode.

A Drum Is a Woman is a musical allegory by American pianist, composer and bandleader Duke Ellington and his long-time musical collaborator Billy Strayhorn. It tells the story of Madam Zajj, the personification of African rhythm, and Carribee Joe, who has his roots firmly in the jungle with his drums. Zajj travels out into the world seeking fame and sophistication and melds with the influences of cultures she weaves through the story, which gives a brief history of the rise of Jazz and Bebop.

Duke Ellington's fanciful tale of Carribee Joe and his drum, which evolved into a woman known as Madam Zajj (and a very abstract telling of the evolution of jazz) became a television special in the late '50s but does not translate all that well to record. Dominated by vocals and narration, the music often plays a backseat to the story, which is worth hearing twice at the most.

DUKE ELLINGTON A Woman Is A Drum LP Album 33rpm Vinyl Good. A lot of this album is taken up with narration and the ‘cute’ little songs that tell the story, and that’s what a lot of people complain about, but although Duke’s orchestra is a bit limited on here, what they do play is excellent and very original. Probably Ellington gladly took on creations like this because it gave him a break from writing dance tunes and gave him a chance to show off his classical level writing and arranging skills. Likewise, his musicians respond to cues for solos, that portray personality, with much humor and virtuoso creativity
