No Way Out (The Chocolate Watchband album). No Way Out is the debut album by the American garage rock band The Chocolate Watchband, and was released in September 1967 on Tower Records (see 1967 in music). It blended both garage and psychedelic rock influences, and was marked by distorted guitar instrumentals that were early examples of protopunk. It features the band's harder-edged interpretations of songs, with only three original compositions
The Chocolate Watchband is an American garage rock band that formed in 1965 in Los Altos, California. The band went through several lineup changes during its existence. Combining psychedelic and garage rock components, their sound was marked by David Aguilar's lead vocals, songwriting, as well as proto-punk musical arrangements . Later in the year, the band released their debut album, No Way Out. Though the album did not chart nationally, the band had a huge following in San Jose and the San Francisco Bay Area. In 1968, their second album, The Inner Mystique, was released and included the band's most popular song, a cover version of "I'm Not Like Everybody Else".
The Chocolate Watchband's debut album, No Way Out was also their most heavily Rolling Stones-influenced album, but appreciating the album and what's on it (and what's not) requires some explanation. Released in September of 1967, No Way Out came at the end of the band's first 15 months of existence, a period that encompassed the recording and release of four singles of generally extraordinary quality, and as good as anything heard from any garage band anywhere during that period

No Way Out. LP (12" album, 33 rpm). The Chocolate Watchband Format: Vinyl. No Way Out. "Please retry". The remaster is surprisingly good, even given the fact they were more or less a garage band and even when listening with an audiophil approach. I don't have the older Sundazed version from 1994, but this new one is really pretty good. Playtime is rather short, but I'm glad getting the original album sounding like this, so no bonus tracks required.
No Way Out is the debut album by the American garage rock band The Chocolate Watchband, and was released in September 1967. The album was released in September 1967, but was mistakenly distributed on Tower Records' Uptown label, a division that mainly promoted blues musicians. Although the album was largely overlooked at the time of its release and had gone out of print by the early 1970s, its reputation has continued to expand over the years. The late 1980s saw the revival of interest in garage rock and, more specifically, the band's music, so in 1993 the album was reissued by Big Beat Records Plus. The reissue included eight bonus tracks.
The Chocolate Watchband, San Jose’s psychedelic proto-punks, set themselves apart from their Bay Area garage-rock peers, The Count Five and the Syndicate Of Sound with a heavier, trippier take on the British Invasion. The five-member band would go on to influence future punks The Damned and The Undertones with their tripped-out Stonesey fuzz. Watchband members also clashed with Ed Cobb on No Way Out follow-up, The Inner Mystique, when he imposed whimsical ballads on the album, much to the band’s chagrin. Cobb also brought back Don Bennett and Richard Podolor to record songs for the album’s entire A-Side.
