I've always been puzzled by the speeds of space craft in Star Wars

The time dilation you get from travelling at that speeds means that the time the traveller experiences is much less. Historically, exploration was slow. You sent out explorers, they treked across the land, or sailed on a ship, and months or years later they report back. Now we may be used to taking a plane to the other side of the world in a matter of hours, but that used to be a treacherous, months-long journey. Mainly, we will require patience.
