Complete your Eberhard Wächter & Fritz Uhl & Herbert von Karajan & Hans Hotter & Richard Wagner record collection. First Appeared on Richard Wagner – Parsifal.
Conductor: Herbert von Karajan. Composer: Richard Wagner. Audio CD (October 20, 1998). There has been no greater conductor of PARSIFAL than Hans Knappertsbusch (Furtwangler may be his better but we have no complete recording with which to compare). Forget the morons like Levine and recent ones who don't have a clue what's going on.

Otherwise Fritz Uhl, Christa Ludwig, Eberhard Wächter and Walter Berry offer brilliant, and in Ludwig, Wächter and Berry's performances, unsurpassed vocalism in the parts of Kundry, Amfortas and Klingsor. Uhl is a fine Parsifal, not as mellifluous and effortless as Klaus Florian Vogt (for von Zweden) or Siegfried Jerusalem (for Barenboim) but as deeply felt and dramatically delivered. Very steady voiced too, with no strain, like René Kollo for Solti. And with such luminaries as Eberhard Waechter, Hans Hotter, and Walter Berry in the cast, one can forgive the dated mono sound. Fritz Uhl sings the title role with somewhat less dramatic distinction than did Windgassen but he is fine on his own terms. A Very Good Choice for those who love Wagner, this opera, or the conductor. I will play this album mostly for the cast. On 4 CDs it takes a good deal of concentrated listening and there is no libretto provided.
Wagner - Parsifal (Karajan). Eberhard Wächter (Baritone) Tugomir Franc (Bass) Hans Hotter (Bass Baritone) Fritz Uhl (Tenor) Walter Berry (Bass Baritone) Hilde Rössl-Majdan (Alto) Christa Ludwig (Mezzo Soprano) Elisabeth Höngen (Mezzo Soprano). Vienna State Opera Chorus Vienna State Opera Orchestra Herbert von Karajan – conductor. According to his autobiography, Wagner conceived of his Parsifal as early as 1857; however, it would be his last completed work, premiered in 1882, the year before his death.
Herbert von Karajan’s 1961 Wiener Staatsoper production of Parsifal caused quite a stir, not only for his idiosyncratic stage directing and lighting, but for employing two sopranos in the role of Kundry. Elisabeth Höngen portrays the frenzied, haggard side of this character in Act 1, the opening scene of Act 2, and silently in Act 3 (except for two words). Best of all is Hans Hotter, arguably the 20th century’s greatest Gurnemanz. He sustains this lengthy role through his care with words, his unerring sense for interior drama, and his strong vocal presence. While BMG’s remastering improves on previously issued pirate versions, the overall mono engineering is strident and claustrophobic, sounding much like those early 1940s Wagner broadcasts recorded by German radio on experimental tape stock. RICHARD WAGNER - Parsifal.
Eberhard Freiherr von Waechter (9 July 1929 – 29 March 1992) was an Austrian baritone celebrated for his performances in the operas of Mozart, Richard Wagner and Richard Strauss. After retiring from singing, he became intendant of the Vienna Volksoper and the Vienna State Opera. Born in Vienna, Waechter studied at the University of Vienna and the Vienna Academy of Music. In 1953, he began voice lessons with Elisabeth Radó.

Herbert von Karajan (German: ( listen); born Heribert Ritter von Karajan; 5 April 1908 – 16 July 1989) was an Austrian conductor. He was principal conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic for 35 years. The critic asserted that Karajan's "success with Wagner's demanding work Tristan und Isolde sets himself alongside Furtwängler and Victor de Sabata, the greatest opera conductors in Germany at the present time". Receiving a contract with Deutsche Grammophon that same year, Karajan made the first of numerous recordings, conducting the Staatskapelle Berlin in the overture to The Magic Flute. Karajan conducted the Berlin Philharmonic in Hans Werner Henze's Sonata per Archi (1958) and Antifone (1960), the only Henze works he ever performed. In 1960 he performed Ildebrando Pizzetti's opera Assassinio nella cattedrale written two years before.
