James Vernon Taylor was born in Boston, Mass. The second of five children, Taylor’s parents, his father a doctor and mother an operatic singer, brought them up in the rural Chapel Hill area of North Carolina where they enjoyed an idyllic childhood with holidays taken on Martha’s Vineyard.
