Kreneks underrated electronic composition. The idea of a Whitsun oratorio originated in the composer's mind as far back as 1948.
Gottfried Michael Koenig is one of the most important composers of electroacoustic music. He was born in 1926 in Magdeburg, Germany, studied church music in Braunschweig, composition, piano, analysis and acoustics in Detmold, music representation techniques in Cologne and computer technique in Bonn. He attended the Darmstadt music summer schools for several years, later as a lecturer.

This experience proved pivotal to Kreneks compositional style, resulting in Spiritus intelligentiae, sanctus (19556), a work for two voices and tape. The electronic medium motivated Krenek to develop a serial idiom; he became interested in the dialectic of predetermination and chance, as well as in the significance of time.

A study of Viennese-born composer Ernst Krenek's prodigious output is rather like a study of twentieth century music in microcosm. Krenek was an American citizen from 1945 on. In the 1950s and 1960s Krenek began to explore electronic composition (. Spiritus intelligentiae Sanctus for voices and electronic sounds in 1956), and also aleatoric (chance) music (. the 1957 work Sestina). During the last decades of his life Krenek scrupulously avoided all compositional "trends" and "systems," choosing instead to rely on his own musical wits.
