One album, Kamaal the Abstract, was ready to roll into stores in 2001 when it was halted; it was finally released by Jive in 2009. His sophomore set finally appeared in late 2008 and earned its title, The Renaissance. Occasionally overlooked is his production and collaborative work.
Album: Kamaal/The Abstract.
This is an album sampler that was issued in 2001 by Arista on CD and vinyl to promote in Q-Tip's then-new project. The album itself was originally intended to be released on April 23, 2002, but was shelved for reasons that are unclear. There is speculation that the advance promos did not meet with enough approval from DJs and music critics.
Kamaal the Abstract is the third studio album by American hip hop artist Q-Tip, released September 15, 2009, on Battery Records. Recorded in 2001, the album is a departure from his solo debut album Amplified (1999). Kamaal the Abstract is an eclectic album that features Q-Tip rapping, singing, and exploring his jazz influences. The album contains introspective and life-related lyrical themes.
A personal, unique project compared to Amplified (Q-Tip's first under his own name), Kamaal the Abstract fittingly sounds more like a solo album; whereas Amplified merely built on the digital soul of the last Tribe Called Quest album (The Love Movement), this one is wide-ranging and diverse, a relaxed, loose-limbed date. Q-Tip lays way back on these cuts, rapping in a quick, low monotone for the opener, "Feelin'," even while the song breaks into some restrained guitar grind on the choruses. Guitars, in fact, crop up all over this record.
Kamaal/The Abstract is the third solo album released by Q-Tip, but it was supposed to be his second. Following the success of Amplified and dancefloor movers like Vivrant Thing and Breathe and Stop, Q-Tip’s then-record label Arista Records balked at the hip-hop/jazz fusion album citing its lack of commercial appeal and shelved it from release in 2002. After years of being bootlegged and it’s limited promotional release, it was fortunately rescued by Battery Records, a subsidiary of Jive Records. Kamaal/The Abstract was finally released September 19, 2009 with new artwork.

Kamaal the Abstract is an intensely idiosyncratic and revealing record. To that end, Q-Tip produced the entire album himself, even playing several instruments. What comes from Kamaal is daring mlange of Soul, supa-cool Jazz, head-nodding Hip Hop, and organic Pop magic in the vein of Stevie Wonder or Prince. So, it was originally released on Arista Records after his successful debut Amplified, but the label's douchebag or should i say: the CEO of Arista's Antonio 'LA' Reid refused to release that album which it claimed to be "un-commercial" aka commercial appeal.
