The Jazz Composer's Orchestra is a 1968 album by the Jazz Composer's Orchestra recorded over a period of six months with Michael Mantler as composer, leader and producer. Many of the key figures in avant-garde jazz from the time contributed on the album including Don Cherry, Pharoah Sanders, Gato Barbieri, Larry Coryell, Roswell Rudd, and Carla Bley. The album's finale features a two-part concerto for Cecil Taylor and orchestra.

Of the 13 selections on the 1977 Zim album (which includes the three-part "Red Hills and Green Barns"), seven were being released for the first time. Among the sidemen, only altoist Charles Mariano became well-known, although tenor saxophonist Sam Margolis (who solos on "Crown Pilots") and trombonist Sonny Truitt (who once recorded with Miles Davis) are here too. Teddi King takes three vocals, including "Oh You Crazy Moon. Pierce would become best known for his Count Basie swing-styled piano, but much of the music on this collection is quite boppish.
