Ottorino Respighi (/rɛˈspiːɡi/ reh-SPEE-ghee, also US: /rəˈ-/ rə-, Italian: ; 9 July 1879 – 18 April 1936) was an Italian violinist, composer and musicologist, best known for his trilogy of orchestral tone poems: Fountains of Rome (1916), Pines of Rome (1924), and Roman Festivals (1928). His musicological interest in 16th-, 17th- and 18th-century music led him to compose pieces based on the music of these periods. He also wrote several operas, the most famous being La fiamma.

Ottorino Respighi (1879-1936) doesn’t really need an introduction, although I’d bet the number of people who have heard much of his music beyond the three Roman tone poems- Pines, Fountains and Festivals are probably a smaller minority. I have a lot of Respighi’s music, and I find it highly varied, but uniformly appealing in its tonal palette. The Botticelli Triptych (1927) comprises musical depictions of three Botticelli works in the Uffizi gallery in Firenze: Spring, Adoration of the Magi and Birth of Venus.
