Tearfund works alongside local churches and other locally-based organisations in over 50 countries to help people realise their plans for a better future. In 50 years we've seen millions of lives restored and we won’t stop until poverty stops. In 2006, Tearfund launched a ten-year vision to see 50 million people released from material and spiritual poverty through a worldwide network of 100,000 churches. This is what we achieved during those ten years, thanks to your support. More than 132,000 churches envisioned. Churches living out faith in Jesus in every aspect of life, recognising that people are more than their hunger or despair – they are made in God's image. Over 29 million people reached through community development projects.
Then on 29 May 1968, George and members of the Evangelical Alliance Relief Fund Committee, meet for the first time. They determined to marry Christian compassion with practical action in the work of this fund. Together, they quickly establish a vision for the new organisation which is to be called Tearfund. Publicity materials for the Tearfund include hard-hitting images and provocative messaging. Tearfund is propelled onto the Christian stage, urging a new, radical understanding of the Gospel as good news to the poor, with an emphasis caring for their physical and spiritual.

TEARFund is formally established after years of giving from Christians around the UK to the Evangelical Alliance Relief fund (EAR), launched in 1960 as a response to famine and war. In 1960, some 40 million people worldwide were made refugees by war or disasters. Coverage of the suffering sparked a spontaneous outpouring of compassion among UK Christians, who sent money to the Evangelical Alliance. Together they quickly established a vision for the new organisation, to be called Tearfund - The Evangelical Alliance Relief Fund. Powerful images, striking design and provocative messaging characterised publicity materials and propelled Tearfund onto the Christian stage, urging a new, radical understanding of what it means to bring good news to the poor, caring for their physical as well as spiritual needs.

Thirty years ago, the Evangelical Alliance in the UK recognised that at least half the population found these charities repugnant, while wanting to aid those suffering from famine etc in the Third World. They set up a charity to do so, naming it The Evangelical Alliance Relief Fund, or Tearfund. Since then it has done good work. But something is wrong. To my astonishment, amidst the usual banners.
