The trio known as Medeski Martin & Wood first teamed up with guitarist John Scofield in 1997, performing on Scofield’s A Go Go album, which helped MMW gain broader expsoure. MMW, which includes bassist Chris Wood teamed up with Scofield again in 2006, releasing the album Out Loud under the name Medeski Scofield Martin & Wood. This week, the combined group released a new album, MSMW Live: In Case The World Changes Its Mind, a two-CD collection of 12 live tracks, culled from the 2006 tour featuring live performances from both earlier albums  . To celebrate their 20-year anniversary in 2011, the group has been releasing its latest album, 20, track by track. Also this year, following the grand Radiolarians series, they decided to issue its DVD portion, Fly in a Bottle, as a separate package; finally, there's MSMW Live: In Case the World Changes Its Mind, an utterly kinetic recording from their 2006 tour with jazz guitar boss John Scofield. In 1997 the trio backed Sco on his stellar A Go Go album. He returned the favor in 2006 by playing on MMW's Out Louder; this tour followed. The double disc collects performances from both.

Scofield's 2010 album 54 had its origin in the 1990s when Vince Mendoza asked him to play on his first album. As director of the Metropole Orchestra, Mendoza collaborated with Scofield on arrangements of Scofield's compositions that were performed by the orchestra  . Jazz guitarist John Scofield and the funkfirm of Medeski, Martin and Wood have been bosom buddies for a while now. The popular jazz trio served as Scofield's backing band for his 1997 album A Go Go and then integrated him into their own collective for Out Louder nine years later. Simply naming themselves Medeski, Scofield, Martin and Wood, they hit the road in support of Out Louder resulting in this double live document, MSMW Live: In Case the World Changes Its Mind. A Go Go proved that MM&W could provide more than competent back up to a slew of Scofield originals
