Howard Tate (August 13, 1939 – December 2, 2011) was an American soul singer and songwriter. His greatest success came with a string of hit singles in the late 1960s, including "Ain't Nobody Home" and "Get It While You Can," the latter of which became a hit for the singer Janis Joplin. After withdrawing from the music business and struggling with drug addiction, Tate mounted a warmly received comeback in 2001.

Having been left for dead - quite literally - Howard Tate and his return to the music world made for one of the more remarkable and most unexpected stories of 2001. With Rediscovered, his first new studio album in nearly 30 years, Tate makes the comeback complete. While Rediscovered makes for a perfectly fitting (if perfectly obvious) title, it works on another level: the album reunites Tate not only with the music world, but also with his key writer and producer, Jerry Ragovoy. Ragovoy, who had long been particularly sympathetic to Tate's style and taste in material, produced this set.

Indeed cult R&B star Howard Tate seems to have hit some sort of fateful trifecta in the mid-'70s, not only cutting short a promising career but leading to one of the most puzzling "whatever happened to?" stories in pop music. Rediscovered" is the word, since Howard Tate has suffered one of the greatest to-hell-and-back stories in showbiz. Hailed as one of the great soulmen when he released his debut album in 1967, Tate subsequently suffered the death of a daughter, the collapse of his marriage and a descent into vagrancy and drug abuse. Then he found the Lord, and, equally importantly, he was reunited with producer/songwriter Jerry Ragovoy, who supervised the creation of Rediscovered.
