The McCanns react to a question about cadaver dogs.

Cadaver Dogs are trained to locate and follow the scent of decomposing human flesh. Not a pretty thought, but their job is vital to both families of the victims, and to a justice system that ofttimes needs a body to prove a crime. These dogs work both on and off-leash and are trained to detect the scent of decomposition that rises from the soil, the same principle as when a dog knows where they last buried their bone. Dogs must be trained as trailing dogs and air-scenting dogs. Trailing dogs follow a scent that has fallen on the ground. It isn't just crime investigations that use Cadaver Dogs.

Cadaver dogs train with synthetic corpse scents and practice using real bodies. They can smell corpses buried 12 feet underground. These dogs have their work cut out for them. Unlike drug- or bomb-sniffing dogs that just need to identify a few specific scents, cadaver dogs must learn to identify hundreds. Training requires a lot of exposure to a lot of putrid odors, but acquiring isolated versions of those odors isn’t easy. Cadaver dogs usually start their training between the ages of 18 months and 2 years.

Diagram showing where cadaver and blood dog alerted inside apartment 5A, where Madeleine McCann's family stayed. According to a Portuguese police report, Eddie and Keela alerted a total of 13 times, including inside the McCann holiday apartment; a rental car they had hired three weeks after Maddie disappeared; and some personal items belonging to the family. In later television interviews, Gerry McCann questioned the reliability of cadaver dogs. The McCanns have strenuously.
Now, the band fronted by John Darnielle has released a follow-up song, Cadaver Sniffing Dog, to promote the record’s forthcoming release on April 26 via Merge. My records indicate that I wrote Cadaver Sniffing Dog on Christmas Day, 2017, which probably tells you more about me than the song itself could ever hope to. I’d had the title in a notebook for several years, and had made a run or two at it, but Christmas lights and early sunsets seem to have put me in the right frame of mind to rise to the challenge of writing something morbid enough to live up to the name.
Training a cadaver dog requires regular contact with human blood, decaying flesh and bones. In the United States, dog handlers can legally obtain bodily components like human placenta and blood, but not always easily, and trainers like Cablk often resort to using their own blood.
