While interesting as a technical experiment, this 1959 Philips recording of Arthur Grumiaux performing both the violin and the piano parts of Mozart's E flat major and Brahms' A major violin sonatas has to be deemed an aesthetic failure. An adequate pianist, Grumiaux is skilled enough to execute the straightforward piano part in Mozart's sonata, but unfortunately is unable to muster the brilliant technique necessary to surmount the heavier demands of Brahms' sonata. Furthermore, Grumiaux the adequate pianist is not really competent enough to accompany Grumiaux the virtuoso.
