Title: Bekenntnisse des Hochstaplers Felix Krull (1982– ). 7/10. This is a masterful Bavarian TV production of "The Confessions of Felix Krull" by Thomas Mann. The lush settings of the countryside, together with the extravagance of high society living in the towns are beautifully conveyed in this story of opportunism. John Moulder-Brown as Felix Krull is perfect for the role and gives a tour-de-force performance.
Confessions of Felix Krull is an unfinished 1954 novel by the German author Thomas Mann. It is a parody of Goethe's autobiography Poetry and Truth, particularly in its pompous tone. The original title is Bekenntnisse des Hochstaplers Felix Krull. Der Memoiren, erster Teil, translated a year later in English as Confessions of Felix Krull, Confidence Man: The Early Years.

Bekenntnisse des Hochstaplers Felix Krull; The Confessions of Felix Krull, Confidence Man (Book I published in 1922, Books I-III in 1954). This picaresque novel was written in three phases: 1910-1911, 1912-1913 and 1950-1954. By the middle of 1911, most of Book One was complete. In Felix Krull Thomas Mann explores the idea that the function of art is to provide performative frameworks for social interaction and individual development. Individual and group identities are always constructed and asserted through aesthetic modalities. Identities are staged by aesthetic means, and so art is integral to personal development and to all processes of social interaction (on this point see Ernest Schonfield, reading list below)
The Confessions of Felix Krull, Confidence Man, novel by Thomas Mann, originally published in German as Die Bekenntnisse des Hochstaplers Felix Krull in 1954; the first few chapters were published in 1922 as a short story. The novel, which was unfinished at Mann’s death, is the story of a confidence man who wins the favour of others by performing the roles they desire of him. From childhood Krull lacks morality and has a masterful ability to play any part he desires. He avoids the draft by inducing symptoms of illness in himself and goes to work in a hotel as a pageboy. While there he manages.

The Confessions of Felix Krull, published in the year of Thomas Mann's death, 1955,is a remarkable work of humor and satire. It is hard to believe that it was written by a man in his late 70's. The book had its origins in a fragment published by Mann long before, in 1909, even before Death in Venice, probably his most well known work, at least these days. This was the last book written by Thomas Mann and it's certainly a masterpiece of German literature. The antithesis of a hero, the impostor Felix Krull has no respect for any moral law. Not only was he a rebel since his youth, but also a cynical and disguised person.
