Weighing of the Heart is first full-length from Iqbal to not bear her former moniker, Throwing Shade, the modish alter ego that she inhabited from 2009 to mid-2017. Iqbal has explained that the decision to do away with the Throwing Shade alias was driven by a desire to stand as a British-Asian artist making music. Saw U Twice sees sparse guitar lines meet melodic bass counterpoint, airy electronic washes and drums that vacillate between post-punk dungeon and New York disco, each perfectly weighed.

Your first album is a culmination of the whole life’s experience that’s gone before so you can really indulge it, she says. It is heavily influenced by the music of her teenage years – everything from Michael Jackson to Britpop to the ska-punk bands she would go to see perform in north London’s Camden every weekend.

Nabihah Iqbal, an ethnomusicologist and NTS Radio DJ from London, used to make lush, abstract dance music as Throwing Shade, and released a series of acclaimed EPs on labels such as No Pain in Pop and Ninja Tune. It's a fully-fledged leap into dreamy indie pop, filled with airy post-punk guitars and driving rhythms.

Nabihah Iqbal, previously known as Throwing Shade, is releasing her debut album on December 1st. It's called Weighing Of The Heart and it's coming out via the UK label Ninja Tune. Iqbal says the decision to revert to her birth name, and dispense with the Throwing Shade alias, is down to her desire to stand proud as a British-Asian female artist. She performed and produced everything on the record, which she made in her studio within Damon Albarn's Studio 13 complex. It was then mixed by Studio 13's Stephen Sedgwick, who also mixed Gorillaz's most recent album, Humanz.

Readying her debut album for Ninja Tune, ‘Weighing of the Heart’ is a big statement in two ways: first, because she’s taken her real name to stand proudly as a female British Asian artists making music and, secondly, because she’s moved her music in a bolder, more expansive direction. Discussing the change in name, she explains how she’d grown out of her previous alias. I chose the Throwing Shade name in 2009 when I was just DJing at parties, unaware of a possible music career. It was a name for the scene at the time, she says. Many musicians like to speak of versatility, but Nabihah Iqbal has better grounds than most. She boasts an MPhil (focused on African history) from Cambridge, experience working in human rights law and a black belt in Karate. Formerly known as Throwing Shade, she’s ditched that moniker to embrace the name she was born with.
