The core elements of Sonic Youth were still scattered all over their 1986 album, but its dark and sordid sound brilliantly captured the essence of an underground band coming to life.

It's not entirely developed in some parts, but there's enough texture, melody, and smarts in here to make it an excellent alb.

The album is notable for being the first with a new drummer, Steve Shelley, replacing Bob Bert, and for showing signs of the band's transition from their no wave past toward a greater pop sensibility.

EVOL" was Sonic Youth's fourth album, significant for one fairly obvious reason: the addition of Steve Shelley behind the kit. Steve joined the band in mid 1985, and this is the first album he plays on. EVOL also features the first real "guest appearance" on a Sonic Youth album - Mike Watt, who contributes bass to "In The Kingdom and the non-LP bonus track "Bubblegum". Shadow Of A Doubt" became their second music video. In 2015, the band reissued the original album in CD and vinyl format on its own Goofin' label.
