It's a concept album, which each song fitting into each other and making out a story similar to the epic sagas, written solely by Quorthon himself. In the pamphlet, Quorthon states that he approached the ambient sound effects as towards those of a film rather than an album.

This album was originally recorded in 1989 and was intended to be the fifth Bathory album, but the album was not immediately released and had not been finished properly. Because of this, Quorthon was worried that it drastically presented a departure from the band's original black metal sound, so the project remained in the vault until it was finally redone in 1995. According to interviews, around 40% of the original material dating from the 80s was re-made - the remaining was untouched.

Instead, Quorthon scrapped the album in fear that it too drastically shifted from his tried and true Viking/black metal combination which was found on Blood Fire Death and Under The Sign Of The Black Mark. Instead, Blood On Ice was left unfinished and unreleased until Quorthon was backed into a corner with Octagon, and so finally the project was re-recorded and unleashed to the metal world. The album fits perfectly in with the Viking era of Bathory circa the early 1990’s.

It is deemed by many fans and critics to be the first black metal record. Bathory had been formed in 1983. The band's frontman, Quorthon, worked part-time at the small record label Tyfon.
