In this MuvieRats video, we talk about one of the greatest soul records of all time: Sam Cooke's Ain't That Good News.
Ain't That Good News is the thirteenth and final studio album by American R&B and soul singer-songwriter Sam Cooke, released mid-February 1964, on RCA Victor Records, in both mono and stereo, LPM 2899 and LSP 2899. Recording sessions for the album took place at RCA Victor's Music Center of the World Studio in February and December 1963 and January 1964. The cover photo was taken by American photographer Wallace Seawell.
The last of his studio albums released in his lifetime, Sam Cooke's Ain't That Good News offers a lot of superb material, pointing in several directions that, alas, were to go largely unexplored. The central number is, of course, the earth-shattering "A Change Is Gonna Come," with its soaring gospel sound and the most elaborate production of any song in Cooke's output. The rousing though less substantial title track also came out of a gospel tradition, as does Cooke's treatment of "Tennessee Waltz," which is one of his finest adaptations of contemporary.
Ain’t That Good News Is the thirteenth and final recording by American Soul-Singer and Songwriter Sam Cooke. It was released to critical acclaim. It became a focal articulation of the African American experience at the turn of the 20th century. Ain't That Good News Q&A.
Ain’t That Good News featured a classic Saturday night/Sunday morning structure: side A, uptempo party tunes; side B, ballads and woe. The title track takes a classic gospel song The Soul Stirrers knew and swaps in pop lyrics-the good news coming isn’t the word of God but word that his girl is headed home. He used it to make an album that he envisioned as a declaration of independence but instead became his epitaph. Nothing Cooke did seemed to come hard for him-be it gospel, which he’d sung with The Soul Stirrers before going pop in 1957, or teenage romance like You Send Me, or proto-bangers like Twistin’ the Night Away and Shake that had both white and black kids moving.
Ain't That Good News", also known as "Good News", is a song written and performed by soul singer Sam Cooke, released on RCA Records in 1964. The song was recorded in three takes for the 1964 album of the same name and reached number eleven on the pop chart, and number one on the Cashbox Magazine's R&B charts as a single. Cooke performed the song live on American Bandstand on April 4 of the same year. It is a modern adaptation of an older gospel song of the same title.
Ain't that Good News" from 1964 was the last album Sam Cooke released in his lifetime, and for me it is also one of his most consistent and artistically successful. In 1964 Cooke was more or less a veteran in pop music, but this album clearly (especially the original side 1) proves he was far from finished in his musical development. Good examples are "Good Times", "Another Saturday Night", "Meet Me at Mary's Place" and of course "A Change Is Gonna Come" which came two exemplify the 1960s' Civil Rights Movement. On tracks like "Ain't that Good News", "Good Times" and his touching interpretation of "The Riddle Song" Cooke shows that he is in tune with the new sounds that streamed to America from Europe, especially thanks to The Beatles. This is undoubtedly Cooke's most modern album, although some of the more orchestrated tracks on the.

Ain't That Good News features some of Sam's best songs, including "Good Times", and was recorded soon after the drowning death of his 18-month old son. The bittersweet agony in Sam's voice is palpable, yet this album sounds much more like a celebration of life than a mourning of its brevity. Ain't That Good News is the stuff of legend.
