A Chip Off the Old Block is an album by American jazz saxophonist Stanley Turrentine. The album features tunes associated with bandleader Count Basie, and was released by Blue Note. Music was performed by Turrentine with organist Shirley Scott, trumpeter Blue Mitchell, bassist Earl May, and drummer Al Harewood. The CD reissue includes two alternate recordings, with Ben Dixon replacing Harewood at the drums and the addition of trombonist Tom McIntosh and saxophonist Charles Davis
Inspired by the songbook of Count Basie, tenor saxophonist Stanley Turrentine and his wife of four years, organist Shirley Scott, planned on recording with a septet, and went into the studio with that band on October 12, 1963, but those sessions were scrapped. On October 14, two tracks were finished and included here, but October 21 saw the band pared down to a quintet, and the results were acceptable. Trumpeter Blue Mitchell's contributions were quite desirable, he was the second lead voice in the ensemble, and success was attained

During the '60s, Stanley Turrentine and Shirley Scott were an inseparable team in the studio, on the bandstand, and at home as husband and wife. A Chip off the Old Block is one of the best of their many classics during this decade. This tribute to Count Basie features signature tunes by Basie, Neal Hefti, and Frank Foster, but this quintet featuring Blue Mitchell puts its own "Blue Note Sound" spin on these big band classics. Issued on CD for the first time, the Rudy Van Gelder remaster includes two bonus tracks from an aborted septet made a week earlier.
