Filth is the debut studio album by American experimental rock band Swans. It was released in 1983 through Neutral Records, following the release of the band's self-titled debut EP in 1982. Though it did not receive much contemporary attention, Filth has since been recognized as ahead of its time and significant to heavy genres of music. Musically, the album is bleak, grinding, and deliberately repetitive, defined by two bassists persistently doubling over the same chord.
Filth is the debut album by American experimental rock band Swans. It was released in 1983 by record label Neutral, following the release of their self-titled debut EP. Contents. The 1990 CD and audio tape, released under the name Filth (. 1982/83, featured the four tracks from Swans' first EP as bonus tracks. The 1990 vinyl re-release preserved the original nine-song track listing. A double CD re-issue, Filth/Body to Body, Job to Job, was released in 2000 on Gira's label Young God Records.
Filth is the debut studio album by American post-punk band Swans. Only band leader and vocalist Michael Gira and drummer Jonathan Kane remained from the original lineup of the band. Filth is the first Swans release to feature the experimental and noisy playing style that the band's early work would become known for. The album's distinct sound is partly the product of a new lineup featuring two drummers (Roli Mosimann and Kane).
Never knew Michael Gira made workout tapes. This album is brutal. The instrumentals are loud and noisy, and the lyrics are vague but straightforward and haunting. A lot of moments in the album definitely stuck out more than I originally expected, as with your typical debut noise rock album. I can tell they're definitely going to evolve from this later in their career. But this wasn't too bad of a debut.
Recorded 1983 Vanguard Studios, NYC. BTB CD is compromised of various studio out-takes and live recordings. Track 2 players: Gira, Kane, Hanel and others (see list below). This 3CD package constitutes a definitive picture of Swans in the years 1982 - 1983/4. Comes in an 8-panel Digipak printed on embossed brown chipboard with a pocket on the left inner panel for the booklet and three transparent trays on the other panels;contains a 16 pages fold-out booklet with lyrics and rare photos.
This is not an album but a musical world, and one in which one must immerse oneself in and once inside will be brought down to its disgusting, depressing level (and cannot leave). Micheal Gira howls like a leper over discordant noise and feeling. Jonathon Kane contrasts his painful vocals with stark and functional drumming.

As a whole album, Filth is just three minutes longer than the longest song on To Be Kind - nasty, brutish, and short like the life it encapsulates. Recorded just as the no wave of the late ’70s was dying out, Filth spiritually, if not aesthetically, carries that movement to a fitting grave. The mainstream had absorbed post-punk, glossing up bands like the Talking Heads and selling them back on major labels. Swans happened as a way to scream no to the idea that art rock could be prettied up and packaged for a suburban audience. It was about making the ugliest, most brutal music possible, slashing at propriety, venting disgust.
