Ein Walzertraum (A Waltz Dream) is an operetta by Oscar Straus with a German libretto by Leopold Jacobson and Felix Dörmann, based on the novella Nux, der Prinzgemahl (Nux, the Prince Consort) by Hans Müller-Einigen from his 1905 book Buch der Abenteuer (Book of Adventures). The young Jacobson presented Straus with a libretto for Ein Walzertraum at a coffee house in the Vienna Prater in 1906. Straus was inspired by the text and completed the work within 12 months for its premiere in spring 1907.

The first production of the company occurred in 1981 with a staging of Gilbert and Sullivan's . Pinafore Lara Teeter succeeded Kraus and served as Artistic Director until 2004. The company has produced a number of Chicago premieres, including Emmerich Kálmán's The Duchess of Chicago (1998), Jerome Moross' The Golden Apple (1995), and Karl Millöcker's The Beggar Student, as well as revivals such as Oscar Straus' The Chocolate Soldier (1987) and A Waltz Dream (1992) (both with translations by Kraus and lyricist Gregory Opelka), Victor. Willy Mattes leads the Symphonie-Orchester Graunke and Wolfgang Baumgart leads Chor der Bayerischen Staatsoper Munchen. Karl Albert has written the music notes. A light and delightful operetta that I very much enjoyed listening to. Highly recommended.

His original name was actually Strauss, but for professional purposes he deliberately omitted the final 's', since he wished not to be associated with the musical Strauss family of Vienna. However, he did follow the advice of Johann Strauss II in 1898 about abandoning the prospective lure of writing waltzes for the more lucrative business of writing for the theatre.
