Excerpts from an excellent and lively rendition of this rarely seen cantata by Robert Burns at Balerno Folk Club's recent Burns Night.
When History Was Made (CD, Album).
The Jolly Beggar also known as The Gaberlunzieman is Child ballad 279. The song's chorus inspired lines in Lord Byron's poem "So, we'll go no more a roving. A beggar comes over the hills one day, and knocks on the door of a local farmer and asks for a roof for the night. Curiously, he will not accept a bed in the barn, but wishes only to sleep by the kitchen fire. Late at night, the farmer's daughter comes down to lock the kitchen door. The beggar and daughter exchange words, and fall in love.
He made major contributions to George Thomson's A Select Collection of Original Scottish Airs for the Voice as well as to James Johnson's Scots Musical Museum.
The Jolly Beggars is one of the glories of Scottish literature. Love and Liberty is Robert Burns excelling himself. The stanza of the initial Recitativo is that of The Cherry and the Slae by Alexander Montgomerie. The "hailstanes" that "skyte" on Scottish lugs are made harder by the long flat vowels of the first word and the Norse consonants of the second, hailstones that bounce do so in gentler climes. We are thoroughly chilled in the first few lines, before being invited into the contrasting comfort of a room which is a bit like the haggis, warm, reeking and in its own way rich.
Bob Hay and the Jolly Beggars have celebrated Burns Night every year locally since 2002 when Bob first played a solo gig of Burns's music upstairs at the Globe in Athens,GA. Since then, they have recorded 3 CDs which have received airplay from as far away as Australia and have performed for the North Georgia Folk Festival a few times. 25 October 2017 ·. Ever wonder why some history textbooks look more favorably on the South after the American Civil War? Meet the United Daughters of the Confederacy. Bob Hay & the Jolly Beggars added an event.
