New Ocean is a new album from musician Jake Bellows. The musician’s former project, the band Neva Dinova (from Omaha, Nebraska), came out of the indie folk music scene. The latter term loosely refers to musical projects that lack the assistance (and generally financial support) of major record labels. As a genre, indie folk attempted to meld the noise and post-punk tradition of the 1980s with the lyrical prowess of 1950s, 1960s and 1970s folk music. In its infancy, post-punk traded the aggressive, disillusioned and often misguided political conceptions of the late 1970s and 1980s punk bands.

Jake Bellows spent 15 years as the frontman for Neva Dinova, recording five albums with them and touring with acts like Death Cab for Cutie and Bright Eyes. Now, a few years after leaving Omaha for Los Angeles, Bellows is releasing his first solo album, New Ocean. The 11-track album blends genres and sounds so describing it as any one genre would be impossible.

New Ocean is the perfect end of summer soundtrack for younger recently minted singles struggling with questions and those wizened few who’ve finally come to terms with their bad livers and broken hearts.

Neva Dinova is an indie band from Omaha, Nebraska. The band is named after the grandmother of lead singer Jake Bellows. They were initially on crank! a record company (though their second release was licensed to Sidecho Records), and recorded a collaborative album with Bright Eyes entitled One Jug of Wine, Two Vessels. In April 2008, the band released their first album from Saddle Creek Records entitled You May Already Be Dreaming.
