Ted Heath has been rightfully described as the biggest name in British swing music but he was much more than that. For many years the American bands and orchestras ruled the world of swing and dance music and it is somewhat ironic that at a time when big bands were beginning to take second place to the vocalists of the day, Ted should form an orchestra that rated such attention and adulation: from fans everywhere. As early as 1942, while with Geraldo's Orchestra, Ted was to be heard on the radio fronting his own band, which was even then known as Ted Heath and His Music. However it was to be another three years before he had put together the band that he wanted, secured a record deal and was in a position to start playing ‘his music’ for swing lovers and dancers alike. In a post-war Britain, the public was eager for as much entertainment as they could get and took the Heath band to their hearts.
