Scottish indie pop legends team with Japanese duo Tenniscoats to record their first non-soundtrack studio album in 12 years. This isn't quite a full-on Pastels album, either: it's a collaboration with the Japanese duo Tenniscoats, who were the ones who had the idea for the collaboration. The Pastels apparently have an album of their own in the works, too, although it's been coming along very slowly for a while. In the 90s, the Pastels were smart enough to realizing that becoming subcultural icons- champions of C86! poster children of wide-eyed amateurist innocent indie-shabby-chic!- meant that they had to change what they did or risk being trapped in their adolescence forever

Tenniscoats is a Japanese band with two members, Saya & Takashi Ueno, but they often have guest musicians (and non-musicians) playing and performing with them. The guest musicians are for example, Secai, LSD March, Eddie Marcon, Popo, Saibou Bungaku, Tetsuya Umeda, Kazumi Nikaido, etc. Saya and Takashi have also performed in many other underground bands, such as Maher Shalal Hash Baz, Cacoy, Puka Puka Brians, Yumbo and others. The album was released on P-Vine Records (Japan) and Aquarius Records (United States). In 2009, Takashi began the psych-folk group, Kasumi Trio. The other members are Shinsuke Michishita (from LSD March), Ikuro Takahashi (from Fushitsusha, Nagisa ni te). Discography. The Theme of Tenniscoats (2000). Two Sunsets (2009, Domino Records) - Collaboration with The Pastels.
Pastels/Tenniscoats: Two Sunsets. The two bands inhabit such similar musical worlds - dreamy places where vocals are wispy, melodies gossamer and the word twee never far away - that their alliance makes sense. But the bands' unselfconscious appreciation of each other brings something more: a buoyant confidence that infuses every subtly orchestrated note.
