The Closing Chronicles (subtitled: The Breathing Shadow II) is the second studio album by the Swedish progressive/AOR metal/rock band Nightingale, released by Black Mark Production in 1996. The album continues the story begun on The Breathing Shadow. Though it finds Swanö moving into the sound that became the band's trademark, the music is not as bombastic as their later albums due to the songs' stark arrangements giving the album an introspective, melancholy feeling

The second album from Nightingale called The Closing Chronicles are a bit different when you compare it to Nightingale�s debut album The Breathing Shadow. Gone are the goth rock influences from the debut and what we have left is an excellent neo prog/ symphonic prog album. Forget that this album is in the progressive metal catagory here on Prog Archives because there are only slight metal tendencies on The Closing Chronicles.

The Closing Chronicles is the album that displays a darker side to this love of all things progressive; as it is without doubt the darkest album that Nightingale has released thus far. A casual listener of Nightingales first album and then this one, without knowing who the band was, would be forgiven for thinking they were two different entities. Whilst The Breathing Shadow had a kind of dark energy The Closing Chronicles instead takes a far more laid back approach, introducing keyboard atmospherics and the piano into the bands sound spectrum.
