Rock 'n Soul is a 1964 studio album by Grammy Award winning musician Solomon Burke. The album contained seven top 100 hits. Originally released on LP on Atlantic Records, in November 1964, it was subsequently reissued in March, 1997, on the Sequel Records imprint, 861. The album was also reissued in 1998 on the Collectables Records label in conjunction with a June, 1963, Burke album as If You Need Me/Rock 'n' Soul.
Collectables' CD If You Need Me/Rock N' Soul contains two original Solomon Burke albums on one CD. Both of the albums are terrific records, filled with passionate performances and excellent songs, making the disc an essential purchase for dedicated Burke collectors, even if the remastering and packaging are a little shoddy.
Soul-R&B pioneer Solomon Burke never gained the level of fame afforded to contemporaries James Brown, Al Green, Wilson Pickett, Otis Redding, or Sam Cooke. Rather, artists such as the Rolling Stones, Otis Redding, and the Blues Brothers introduced him to a wider audience through their cover versions. The Stones’ early versions of Cry to Me and Everybody Needs Somebody to Love especially stand out. In fact, the former appeared over 20 years later in the 1987 blockbuster Dirty Dancing, garnering renewed interest in the singer.
