Music video by PJ Harvey performing The Hope Six Demolition Project. C) 2015 Island Records, a division of Universal Music Operations Limited.
Chugging guitar underlines the ever-present sense of disenchantment in ironically bleak opener The Community of Hope, named after a local charity and already controversial with Washington DC citizens angry at being branded zombies living in a drug town shit-hole. By closing refrain They’re gonna put a Walmart here you’re already drowned in life’s pointlessness, and there’s still ten more songs to go.

It’s leering, brash, and dissonant, but also not without its warmth: Despite the bleakness of the guided car tour in "The Community of Hope," there’s a driving optimism to its droning guitar and steady drums. Questions of perspective, and how we bear witness, feel central to The Hope Six Demolition Project. We were voyeurs, watching her make a record about being a voyeur. Is it a deconstruction of the protest record?
Photograph: Maria Mochnacz. The Hope Six Demolition Project is an album with quite a story attached. Preparations for the follow-up to 2011’s Mercury prize-winning Let England Shake involved Polly Harvey travelling to Afghanistan, Kosovo and the grimmer parts of Washington DC in the company of film-maker and photographer Seamus Murphy, the better to record the effects of war and poverty. In contrast to Let England Shake’s gauzy layers of echoing guitars and abstruse samples, The Hope Six Demolition Project deals in a kind of raucous simplicity. It involves thumping drums (heavy on the tom-toms), distorted guitars, massed Bad Seeds-like backing vocals, big, hook-laden choruses and really sharp, punchily effective tunes; it’s a long time since a PJ Harvey album felt as abundant in earworm melodies as this.
PJ Harvey’s ninth album of stormy, spectral blues-rock feels like a kind of sequel to 2011’s Let England Shake. This time, she maps her apocalyptic vision onto America. Led by the eerie, anthemic The Community of Hope, The Hope Six Demolition Project strikes Harvey’s inimitable balance between ethereal and direct, ghostly and gut-punching. The military choruses ( The Ministry of Defence ), blues stomps ( The Ministry of Social Affairs ), and haunted, New Orleans-style shuffles ( Medicinals ) here are all anchored by her plaintive howl. The Hope Six Demolition Project PJ Harvey.
Harvey delivers more feeling than reporting when she juxtaposes fading photographs of missing children with relentless brass and beats on "The Wheel" or lets her lyrics pile on top of each other with funereal inevitability on the weary "Chain of Keys. However, the album's weak moments are almost as striking as its strengths.

Harvey’s ninth studio album takes us on a lyrical journey through Kosovo, Afghanistan and Washington, ., via her open studio at London’s Somerset House. Harvey has again collaborated with Seamus Murphy, the documentary war photographer who turned music video maker for her 2011 album, Let England Shake, creating films for all 12 tracks. When I'm writing a song I visualise the entire scene. I can see the colours, I can tell the time of day, I can sense the mood, I can see the light changing, the shadows moving, everything in that picture. Gathering information from secondary sources felt too far removed for what I was trying to write about. I wanted to smell the air, feel the soil and meet the people of the countries I was fascinated.
