Safe as Milk is the debut studio album by American rock group Captain Beefheart and his Magic Band, released in June 1967 by Buddah Records. A heavily blues-influenced work, the album featured a 20-year-old Ry Cooder, who played guitar and wrote some of the arrangements. Before recording Safe as Milk, the band had released a couple of singles through A&M Records, and it was to this company that the group first proposed their début album in 1966.

After "Safe As Milk" the band line-up was in flux. When they re-entered a recording studio in October 1967, for what was to be a double album "It Comes To You In A Plain Brown Wrapper", the project met various problems. Tracks from sessions surfaced on Beefheart's 2nd "Strictly Personal" & 5th "Mirror Man" albums, among other releases. Consequently, some of the recordings from these sessions appear later, issued as 'bonus' tracks on "Safe As Milk" releases

Captain Beefheart’s debut album failed to chart in the United States and the United Kingdom, but later became one of the most influential records of the 60s. Featuring a young Ry Cooder on guitar, the Delta Blues-inspired album incorporated uncommon time signatures and eccentric lyrics that would become signature traits Captain Beefheart. The album caught more traction in Europe, notably by The Beatles. John Lennon and George Harrison displayed Safe as Milk promotional stickers in their homes. Safe as Milk Q&A.

Featuring Ry Cooder on guitar, this is blues-rock gone slightly askew, with jagged, fractured rhythms, soulful, twisting vocals from Van Vliet, and more doo wop, soul, straight blues, and folk-rock influences than he would employ on his more avant-garde outings

Album · 1967 · 19 Songs. Above all, Beefheart and his Magic Band took deep blues as source material and kneaded it into the grotesque and wonderful shapes of Sure ‘Nuff ‘n’ Yes, I Do, Plastic Factory and Grown So Ugly, the last of which is a cover of an obscure song by Louisiana singer Robert Pete Williams. The great Electricity comes on like a typhoon, and most predicts the Magic Band’s future sound. Just as essential are the bonus tracks (13 to 19), which show the Magic Band breaking through to totally uncharted forms of mangled, triumphant American soul music.

Notes

Released on the Buddah (Multi-color) label and distributed by Barclay in France as "Volume 8*" of Eddie Barclay's "Super Group" albums series.

*As was often the case with Barclay packaging, a number of print errors occur;
The cover shows "Volume 8" and the word "Majic" instead of "Magic", the labels show "Volume 7" and the band titled correctly. The track list refers to "Vanderer" instead of "Wanderer" for A2.
The Barclay Listing for their 'Series' on the b/cover agrees with "7" as the volume.

This was the first issue of the album in the French market. The cover features a PR shot from the filmed performance the band did on Cannes beach at the 1968 MIDEM Pop Festival. (Footage of this can be seen on the multimedia CD in the "Grow Fins" box set).

This release was supported Barclay's 1970 distribution of the French single Sure 'Nuff 'N Yes I Do, using the original Guy Webster band photo on picture sleeve.
