Protest Songs was recorded and mixed by Richard Digby Smith at Lynx Studio, Newcastle Upon Tyne in September 1985, the exceptions being Dublin & Pearly Gates which were remixed at Utopia in New York by Michael H. Brauer and Life Of Surprises which was mixed by Lance Phillips. Protest Songs was originally to be released in december 1985 and chronologically belongs between Steve McQueen and From Langley Park To Memphis.
Johann Sebastian Bach composed the church cantata Du Friedefürst, Herr Jesu Christ (You Prince of Peace, Lord Jesus Christ), BWV 116, in Leipzig for the 25th Sunday after Trinity. He led the first performance on 26 November 1724, concluding the liturgical year of 1724. The cantata is based upon Jakob Ebert's hymn "Du Friedefürst, Herr Jesu Christ"

The author of Herr Jesu Christ, du höchstes Gut is Bartholomäus Ringwaldt/Ringwald (1530-1599) who was born in Frankfurt on the Oder and who, in his final position, was a pastor in Langenfeld in the province of Neumark. He was known for his intrepid sermons on penance and in support of high morals. There are some important chorale texts by him still in use today which include, in addition to the presently mentioned one, Es ist gewißlich an der Zeit and Lobet den Herrn, und dankt ihm seine Gaben.
